Let’s face it…we sucked….big time…

It was there on a near-empty bar named 9-Mile that PayItForward, after almost a year of hibernation played again onstage, to the dismay of friends and unfamiliar faces.

Of course, being the proud people that we are we’d deny the reality that we sucked, we’d blame the equipment particularly the drum set, we’d blame the other bands who elbowed their way to skip the lineup and just play when they want to regardless of the lineup.

We could go on and on about the how’s and why’s of why we played terribly that night in spite of the fact that we now have our own gears, we’re old and we have our own priorities that we cannot simply just put aside for the sake of practicing. We have become over-confident of our capacity to play during rehearsals; we have become naïve in believing that we’d always be met with the equipment that’s as far as we’re concerned on par with our expected sound.

It sucked, so what after almost more than a decade of playing live on stage and having more than enough of our share of public humiliation as a band, what’s a bad set compared to what we learn with experiences like such. Thankfully tomorrow’s another day.

somehow we're unofficially (if there is such a word), back and somehow we've been dabbling around with MySpace and stuff. We're practicing again in a somewhat regular basis, and plan to do recording this year (hopefully this time it's for real...) in the meantime we've setup a MySpace account that doesn't have much in it yet but for those of you who has an account there can add us on this link http://www.myspace.com/payitforwardrocks

After a long hiatus PayItForward once again got up the stage and was able to play alongside their favorite punk band Bad Omen as well as with their longtime comrades All Wound Up, Ginseng, Blue Martian Cookies and I'm the Bridge and not to mention DeathToPuberty it was truly an ecstatic feeling. Hopefully more gigs and probably a recording would follow.

Before I go further let me just say this...

I wasn't planning on writing this but the more I ignore it, the more disillusioned that I get.

If it is of any consolation, let me make it clear that in no way do I plan to depart from the band that is PayItForward, but I cannot also help but feel discouraged with the way things are going right now. This is supposed to be about a collective musical collaboration that rests on the friendship that's been shared by every individual member. But looking at it now, I find it surprising that such a bond seems quite vague. I cannot help but feel as though I this was just a mere burn-out reaction to numerous consecutive gigs. I believe this goes far beyond.

I'm really not quite sure what on earth is happening with every single member. But getting everybody to have the motivation to play again is really becoming such a difficult task. Especially since little effort to encourage or edify one another is exhibited. I can't help but think that there's animosity towards each other ever since the last Slam Demockracy gig on Freedom Bar up to the time that we can't seem to make ourselves available for at least a practice. It's really tiring to ask someone who refuses to play out of sheer stubborn slothfulness. Nor is it a great feeling to have someone constantly telling you to ask the slothful one to have interest in playing again. Its discouraging to see someone make a lame excuse about his need to get home early, but instead chose to stay and watch the rest of us play, without him. Could it be just because someone's afraid of a fear to be in a political gig? Or is it cool to have to constantly remind someone to be on the venue on time.?

This is sickening because it appears as though like we're suffering from rock star syndrome but the sad truth of the matter there is that we're not rock stars. Nor do we aspire to be such. This is getting pointless. Especially since there's already gigs that have been wasted away because of this crap that's been going on. It reminds me of Life Is Trying. But I don't want it to end up like Life Is Trying. Hopefully this would be just a phase that would soon be over. Hopefully.

The Story So Far...

People say that old habits die hard...

...If it is true then, such may be the case with PayItForward. Which is a relatively new band that admittedly rose up from the ashes of an old one.

The story revolves around the friendship and musical collaboration of four kindred souls who've found solace in the form of punk rock. The genre that would become the cornerstone of their music and the soundtrack of their lives.

Originally known as M35B, which derived its name from Chuck Baclagon's suburban pad in Quezon City, the refuge that spawned the forming of the band which composed of:

Chuck - vocals

Laix - guitar/vocals

Cedric - bass

Jarme - drums

This lineup played several gigs on Chuck, Laix, and Cedric's alma matter PUP and practiced at the legendary Alberto's Studio. But as time progressed so did Jarme's priorities and musical pursuit drifted farther from the rest of the band. It almost ended with a tragic demise but then came Mark who saved the day for the band, after agreeing to play some practice sessions with them, after meeting Cedric at a video game arcade somewhere in Marikina.

Eventually, Mark finally came as a well and able replacement for Jarme b the time he debuted for a band fest in PUP Masscom's Foundation Day. Which up to now proves as one of their best performances.

As time went on the band decided to change its name to Life Is Trying, this time adding their longtime friend Reggie on bass and moving Cedric on 2nd guitar, this time playing a combination of original compositions and covers from bands such as MxPx, Blink-182, Greenday, The Offspring and Goldfinger.

It was during this time that the band was able to play alongside bands such as: Agaw Agimat, Radioactive Sago Project, Cheese, Kamikaze, Itchy Worms, The Jerks, The Wuds, 3rd Degree Burn, Too Late The Hero etc. on several occasions at PUP and on other venues it was also during this time when Cedric temporarily left the band to go to Davao, to visit his father's wake.

So as time went on each of the band members shifted to their different priorities at the time. So after a couple of canceled gigs and rehearsals Chuck decided to leave and pursue his newfound career in web design, and to shortly sing for the notorious underground crust band NSA but later on left to give more time for his new work in web development.

The rest of the band continued to write songs with Laix filling on on the vocals. And so they pressed in with the music with Cedric also doing guitar duties to Moodswing, a two-tone ska outfit that composed of some of his grade school friends.

With Chuck somewhat busy with his work, church activities and work. The band proved themselves to be more than capable to continue with their music in his absence. But it didn't take Laix long to realize the void left by the departure of Chuck, and so after a few months of visiting and convincing Laix finally got to convince Chuck to be part of Life Is Trying again.

Whereupon the talks with Laix and Mark, made Chuck realize just how much of an egocentric schmuck he has become during the preceding days before he left and that he'd forgotten the very reason for their existence as a band was simply to have fun and make music while they're at it.

And so with renewed enthusiasm for playing Chuck, Laix and Mark returned to their roots and practiced their songs with Chuck's battered acoustic guitar and then finally deciding to change their name so as to move on from where Life Is Trying left off...

...Thus the name PayItForward was born whereupon they eventually added Cedric on guitars they were able to play their first gig courtesy of Bong (Philippine Violator's) Espiritu's RMD Productions in San Juan, where later on they finally got to play with their teenage heroes like the legendary Bad Omen, Philippine Violators and the Askals and right now their also a regular band under Slumber Army Productions an outfit that has Cedric as one of the organizers together with their friend Peejay and Joel of the straight edge hardcore band All Wound Up.

So all in all in the short span of time that they've been playing they have played along side such legendary punk bands like BadOmen, the Philippine Violators and the Askals as well as with some obscurely famous poppish artists like Julia Clarete, Tado & Live Tilapia to some of the most awsome underground punk outfits today like: Mobstar Manila, Strap On 7-Inch, Jeepney Joyride, Beauty of Doubt, Aunt Audrey etc. To medicore rock outfits such as Grin Department and Cover Me Quick to the most promising unknowns in the underground like All Wound Up and Ginseng.

As of now no one knows what the future holds for the band but rest assured that as long as their friendship is in tact their still music to be heard from these kindred punks who find music a very old habit that they find hard to kill.

Free Turkey's Energy Revolutionaries Update

hi folks just an update:
In 24 hours, over 2,000 petitions from 54 countries were sent demanding that restrictions on the Turkey activists be lifted and that a climate-friendly energy policy be adopted by the Turkish government. Some time after the first day, the number of petitions went over 4,000. And now they're free... The Istanbul judge stated that she was "well aware of the international pressure being applied."

Thanks to all those who took a few seconds to sign the petition and to forward the cyberaction to others. This is a reminder that quick cyber kick-ass works... Below is the translation of the press release that went out in Turkey.

Greenpeace Welcomes The Turkish Court Lifting Restrictions on the
Climate Activists

Climate Activists: œTurkey, must switch to peaceful, renewable energy sources, away from climate changing fossil fuels like coal!

9 September 2005, Can-Canakkale/Istanbul “Can criminal court today lifted the restrictions on the movement of 21 Greenpeace climate activists. The restrictions have no precedent in cases of environmental protest in Turkey. They demonstrated at Can coal-fired power plant on Aug. 29 in protest at the Turkish Government™s dangerous energy policy (1). Had these type of restrictions were not lifted they could have set a negative precedent to quash environmental protest in Turkey.

The 5 foreign nationals who were not able to go back to their countries since more than 10 days were particularly affected. The activists are charged with the law of illegal demonstrations (#2911) and the first court session will be held on Sept. 22.

As a result of the ruling, international pressure is focused on Turkish embassies and the Turkish Government itself. More than 30 Greenpeace offices worldwide wrote to the respective Turkish embassies in their countries demanding that the Turkish authorities do everything in the power to get the bail conditions lifted. Greenpeace supporters from over 50 countries across the world added their voice to the protest with a cyber-action directed to the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Gul and the Minister of Energy Hilmi Guler (2).

Greenpeace Spokesperson Hilal Atici said:

”The activists took non-violent action to expose a major cause of climate change that threatens to affect us all “ the use of coal in power plants. Recently we”ve witnessed serious extreme weather events in Europe and in the US. We also suffer in Turkey from floods, droughts and increased forest fires. In the medium run, these effects will provoke agricultural deterioration, water shortages and reduce tourism. These catastrophes are examples of the climate chaos caused by our continuing dependence on fossil fuel sources, such as coal, oil and gas. Turkey must take its part in the efforts of the international community to stop this disaster and switch to peaceful renewable energy sources like wind, solar, small hydro, geothermal and biomass.

Greenpeace demands from the Turkish Government that it:
Set a long term renewable energy target of 10% by 2010 and 20% by 2020

Attendand actively engage in the forthcoming meeting of the
• Johannesburg Renewable Energy Coalition (JREC) in November 2005 that will seek to establish global renewable energy targets

Takepart in the forthcoming International conference on climate change in December on Canada with a view to signing and ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.

On the 29th August, 21 Greenpeace volunteers from five countries, including Turkey, the Netherlands, Australia, Israel and Cyprus protested against Turkey's climate-damaging energy policy at a coal-fired power plant. As a result of their actions, they are being confined to Turkish borders without charge for an indefinite period of time until the court case begins.
These excessively harsh bail conditions are an attempt to quash environmental protest in Turkey. No volunteer involved in a Greenpeace action has ever failed to attend a court date, and there is no evidence to indicate that such restrictions are necessary.

a couple of weeks ago a poster caught our attention. it was a poster that lists Pay It Forward as one of the bands that are to play in there. but that wasn't us so we decided to sms the contact listed in the poster and to our surprise it was the organizer's band saying that they've been around for 10 years and so on...(even giving us bitter bragging rights about them being an 'underground' band) and basically we just made it clear that we have no intention of changing our band name for their sake nor would we brag about being an underground band and if so how would one define a band as an underground band anyways if you'd ask us basically we'd just say that if you're a band that's:
- not a regular performer for a certain venue
- not paid for your performance
- not signed to any record label (manstream or otherwise)
- not managed by a professional promotions person

then very much that would fit us as an underground as well. so what's the point of boasting about it?
and that's basically the point that chuck made clear with regards to the other pay it forward, but unfortunately before getting the response from the other pay it forward the phone that chuck used (which is cedric's phone) was stolen you see later that night cedric was mugged along with mark on their way home.
so this is basically to set it clear that so be it if there is another one out there that carries the name pay it forward so to make it clear we'd be using PayItForward as our official name and after all the stuff that we have already it would be very taxing for us to change our band name considering that we already have a domain to our name as well as other stuff online. hope this settles it.

After a great deal of whining we arrived an hour and a half late at
Alberto's to find Cedric together with Bon sporting that familiar frown
that we've all been familiar with Cedric. This is Pay It Forward. Well,
almost...
... Mark still isn't around yet and its already been 30 minutes since
Laix and I have set foot on the waiting area of Alberto's. We're already
sick and tired of looking at Boy Abunda's bald head as we sat there
together with the studio's owner Mang Jun who seemed to be enjoying the
cheap tabloid humor of ABS-CBN.
By the time The Buzz was over Mark ascends from the stairs together
with his buddy Emil whom we haven't seen for quite sometime so after the
usual chit chat of 'hellos' and 'how are yous' we enter the studio and
practice by the time we've finished we're already been getting constant
text messages courtesy of All Wound Up another band that we'll be
playing with that night.
So right after we've paid our bill we hurriedly proceeded to the venue
which is on this far flung republic of Alabang a very foreign place for
us QC-based punkers, but nevertheless we could play there and so we
decided it was worth going to.
After grabbing a bite at 711 we went of on a train ride to the trusty
railway system known to many yuppie scums as the MRT it was quite
crowded but all of us were able to sit down (except for Laix who was very
busy with his mobile phone talking to a girl named Kat)by the time the
train stopped on Ortigas where there resides the oh-so popular Megamall.
Jeanie text me as the train was leaving Boni Avenue station saying that
she won't be able to make it because her mom didn't allow her and Tina
her sister because of the venue's tangent distance from their place in
Manila. With a sigh, I replied to her in the message that its alright
and that we'll head home as soon as we finish our set.
Nearing our stop I've already gotten several texts from Chit who was
one of the gig's organizers inquiring as to where we are already.
Proximity was one of the things that we all are struggling at the moment as we
hope for the train to arrive to our stop and it looks as though as we
enjoyed our train ride so much that we forgot to get off the train on
our stop so we decided to stay on the train and wait for it to turn
around so that we could get of at our intended stop at Magalanes.
So while we were waiting we hurriedly ate the donuts that we bought
before boarding the MRT and asked Bon to take pictures of us with her
handy-dandy digicam.
As we got off Cedric decided to change his shirt on the station's
toilet so Laix, Bon and I waited for him right outside the station where
Laix thought it would be great to have our pictures on the station so we
both paused in for a snapshot wherein we were later approached by a
disapproving security guard saying that taking pictures inside the station
isn't allowed.
As soon as Cedric, Mark and Emil got out of the toilet we crossed the
overpass to board the Alabang-bound buses.
I'm not quite sure but I was shocked that the bus fare is still more
than P20 and we're already in Makati which is relatively near Alabang or
so we thought...
I was amazed that one by one our bus passed by those familiar landmarks
that I rarely see (usually I just see them whenever there'd be a family
affair somewhere in Southern Luzon or whenever we'd be going on those
redundant high school field trips to Laguna to go and see Rizal's house
in Calamba). It was really weird to see that we just went pass Splash
Island which I thought was no longer in Metro Manila. We got off along
with all the other passengers on the bus' last stop.
You wouldn't believe that there in front of us is a billboard for a
store that rings an era of our childhood that is synonymous to Mighty Kids
and Sperry Topsiders...Zenco Footsteps...whoa! This must be some weird
stroll down memory lane.
So as we crossed the street going to Jazmer's (the gig's venue, which
we don't have any clue at the time as to where it) we strolled around
this crowded street filled with vendors selling pirated DVDs and VCDs
which kind of reminded be and Laix of Raon in Quiapo along with the
familiar lines like: "Dee Bee Dee!" and "Boss Ex! Boss Ex!"
Good thing Cedric had the initiative to call the guys from All Wound Up
on their cellphone thus helping us to finally arrive on the venue.
Tired and exhausted of the long journey we were surprised to see the
venue situated along a long row of videoke bars which had those GROs in
thick makeups and stuff.
Anyways there on the door we were greeted by Chit saying that All Wound
Up have been waiting for us so we got in and we got this cool spot
which is sort of like a VIP room in there where there's this ultraviolet
light that sort of illuminated anything white and so we goofed off with
Bon's camera taking pictures of ourselves since we thought it would be
cool to have pictures of ourselves looking like the Crypt Keeper on
Tales From The Crypt, or like the dudes from Alkaline Trio in their photo
on the cover of their From Here To Infirmary album. But those darn
pre-set light controls of the camera didn't make that possible for us so
instead we looked like total idiots showing off our teeth and posing
beside an alien 3D painting on the room's wall as a band playing Punk Rock
101 lingered on the background.
Later I was greeted by Pule of Cary Grant near the table where he sat
together with the other members of the band and some of their other
friends from Adamson.
Then came this band with a guy that sort of looks like Bret Hart of WWF
who sang in a falsetto voice that made Mark laugh his heart out.
As the next band whose guitar player's playing reminded me of Siakol's
palm-muted strums, Emil, Mark and I decided to get out for a while and
grab a meal at this nearby Mini Stop, and as we got out I was greeted
by Mike of the Atheismo blog. We were quite shocked that when we got
back to the venue band that sort of played like Siakol was still there
playing talk about concerts. Well anyways its a good thing the next band
played a song that's somewhat familiar to our ears which was Saves The
Day's At Your Funeral followed by another band that covered Save Ferris'
rendition of Come On Eileen.
It was already pass midnight and I was already getting missed calls
from Jeanie as the band playing before us went on stage which was Cary
Grant who played Ash songs who also got the chance to have a lot of fun
filled tales to tell after their set and I wouldn't bother to tell you
this so I guess you could ask them about it...
Well anyways be the time got up the stage Cedric asked Jack of All
Wound Up to tune the bass guitar that I'll be using and he also got frantic
because of that complex amplifier that he inserted his guitar into (and
come to think of it that amp sort of reminded me of Voltron's
dashboard).
And so we played our set but as we started our second song Mark
couldn't hear Cedric's guitar and Cedric again had this grin that he sported
earlier while he was still waiting for us to arrive on Alberto's.
Nevertheless we played and finished our set as we intended it to be
without any embarrassing moment that would forever scar us.
Next up was All Wound Up whom I was also going to see live for the
first time and they were really good and flawlessly played their set to the
estranged crowd.
After their set it was announced that the gig was already over and its
already 1AM and so after a few goodbyes to the organizers we together
with All Wound Up all hopped in this SM Fairview bus and shared our
laughs and got home safe and sound.

on a sadder note we're very apologetic to announce that we won't be able to play on 2 upcoming gigs due to setbacks with the organizers and the inavailability of some members hopefully all this would be sorted out soon...
while on a lighter note we thank all those who we're able to watch us at this short notice gig on The Venue in Vito Cruz Manila last April 21, 2005 so in behalf of the rest of Pay It Forward and All Wound Up we'd like to thank you as well as Wokway Productions for having us on such short notice.
by the way by tomorrow we'll be recording 5 of our compositions at Alberto's Studio and hopefully we'll be able to give out copies of the recording in our next upcoming gig.

this has been an overdue thanks post.

Its almost been a week now since our last gig-cum-roadtrip-adventure down south and PayItForward would really just want to thank this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to Moshpit Productions for letting us play and especially to chit for inviting us and also for the good folks that helped in the logistics like Mang Jun, Bon & Emil as well as to the other bands who shared the stage with us namely to that of All Wound Up & Cary Grant and to those who came to watch. Thanks for the support. God bless you all!

Chuck is currently writing about this adventure but he still hasn’t gotten the time yet to finish it yet (he's currently busy with a lot of freelance stuff since he already left his recent job and he'll be studying animation in the coming days and he's preparing his lesson for this creative writing workshop that he'll be teaching on the 18th-20th of april)hopefully we’ll soon read the article pretty soon and as well as see some pics from the said adventure courtesy of Cedric if he remembers to upload the stuff on his fotopages account

On the Shoulder of Our Heroes

Philippine Violators, Bad Omen and the Askals were really distant names to me back then, when I used to listen to their songs as a teenage punk fan that was among the many anonymous blokes that littered the streets of Recto. Back then such names were to me basically synonymous to such songs as ‘Sikat Na Si Pedro’ (Philippine Violators), ‘Maling Sistema’ (Bad Omen). But that was then…

This is now.

Today is quite different for me and the rest of PayItForward because this time in that small venue along España Manila we were seeing the name of our wee band lined up along with our adolescent punk heroes who’s names echoed to us the sounds that played the anthem of our youthful angst that was courtesy of such cassettes that were released under the moniker of RMD and Middle Finger Productions, also vividly refreshing our memories of those a dime a dozen DIY shows that we got to see during the 90s.

This time it is a startling realization for us that we were on the same gig with them playing under the same production as that of the Violators and for a newly formed band that has been in existence for only a couple of months we see it as a breakthrough in itself for us since this was only our second gig as a band and we’re now watching Bad Omen in awe as we’re waiting for our turn to play.

This was just our second gig. Our first one is on some distantly unknown venue in San Juan which was also organized by RMD, which basically gave us the chance to play under their wing all thanks to Rotten of PhilVio who introduced our band to Bong.

Looking at the flashing of the red, yellow, orange, blue and all those other spectrums of light crash down on the sight of Bad Omen rocking out all I could say was basically right now is awesome. Absolutely awesome.

They finished their set.

We play and for a couple of minutes or so we sang and put our hearts on the center stage as we utter the unsung hopes and dreams that we as a working unit of musicians and individuals put into melody those songs that were made so as to utter that blissful noise of our emotional punk yearnings and screams which were given life by the buzzing clatter of distorted guitars played in full blast alongside the pummeling staccato of drums.

I know that in the days to come all this would all but fade into but the obscurity of a distant memory for us as a band, nevertheless it would not change the fact that once upon a blue moon we shared the same stage with them whom we really looked up to musically, and I know that there might be others who’ve written about such memories more eloquently than this one about that time in their lives when they have come face to face with their heroes, and I know this piece of writing is not such.

But true enough this was written not because of flattery, or self-immolation. This is a heartfelt appreciation of how God enabled us as a band to be of such stride so as to play with them.

It was simply amazing and that’s just the beginning…

i was quite surprised yesterday that i got a text message from bong of philippine violators & rmd, you see earlier i contacted rotten at his blog inquiring if ever pay it forward could support them for their gigs a week ago. and up until yesterday there wasn't a reply from rotten when suddenly yesterday afternoon i got a txt from bong saying this:

"Pay it 4ward ROTTEN gave me ur no. Pwede ko n b kyo isalang kgd f my possible gig tayo? C Bong PHIL Vio nga pla 2 ng RMD."

i must say that i was caught by surprise but somehow i wasn't able to reply because i'm flat broke i don't have a load in my cel and right now i even skipped lunch because i can't afford to buy one. so i hope if in any case bong or rotten could read this now. the answer is a unanimous yes.

there's no practice scheduled for this week since mark our drummer is sick he told me that he wasn't able to go to school for two days and that he'd like to spend time for rest until he fully recovers. which sort of reminded me of how the rest of the guys also gave me time to recover from my sickness a few weeks back. hopefully mark recovers soon i hope he enjoys the time for rest that he's gotten, perhaps in a few days we'd be able again to practice.

Last night we resumed our scheduled regular practice at Alberto's. The session lasted for very well about an hour inside the studio with more than an hour spent outside waiting for our turn, and in turn leaving us stuck there to suffer from the inhalation of second hand smoke from the other bands who are fond of smoking their cigarettes. Another is that apparently Cedric brought his brother's Umax digital camera and we also got the chance to take pictures of ourselves (too bad though that he still hasn't sent me yet the pictures so that I can upload them here.) Nevertheless, I'd post it here as soon as I get the pics. Another is that we got to start out with playing another composition called Coffee Break Symphony, that is to be sung by Laix. It's also great to see Emil again who joined us on the practice to take pictures of us. Lastly is that we've finally come to agree on the lineup (instrument-wise) the new lineup as it goes would be Me on bass and on vocals on several songs; Laix on guitar also on vocals on some songs; Cedric on another guitar and would be providing backup vocals to both me and Laix; and finally Mark on drums.

Today is such a good day for charting new horizons with what we've picked up from the ashes and in our case it is the ashes of the demise of the band that was once known as Life Is Trying.

It lays to rest now in our memories and we know go and take that step forward as Pay It Forward.

That was then this is now.

And this is just the beginning.

Not the end.
